Plot summary
In 1932, Ray Gibson, a small-time thief, lifts Claude Banks's wallet, and the two different New Yorkers meet at Spanky's. To clear their debts, Ray talks Spanky into letting them run bootleg liquor in the South, where Whites Only businesses refuse them service. Ray describes Ray's Boom Boom Room, a Manhattan club that exists only in his mind. After buying Mississippi hooch, they stop in a local bar, where Ray stakes his father's pocket watch in a poker game and loses it to card hustler Winston Hancock, while Claude gives their last two dollars to a prostitute named Sylvia. Outside, Ray and Claude are charged with Hancock's murder and sentenced to life at Camp 8.
