Plot summary
Jackson Maine performs a concert while battling an addiction to alcohol and drugs. His manager and older half-brother, Bobby, is his main support. Afterward Jack goes drinking and lands at a drag bar, where he watches Ally, a waitress and singer-songwriter, perform a tribute to Édith Piaf. He is impressed, and the two talk all night. Ally describes her failed attempts at a music career and reads him lyrics she wrote. Jack says she should be performing her own songs, and asks her to come to his next show. She turns him down, then changes her mind and sings with him on stage; footage from the crowd spreads widely and starts her career. He invites her on tour, and the two become a couple.

- At a Chateau Marmont industry event during promotion of American Sniper, Annie Lennox performed and Bradley Cooper suggested reviving A Star Is Born to Clint Eastwood, who told him the project had moved on. That night Cooper dreamed the film's opening sequence and later used it when pitching his version to Warner Bros.

"Shallow" was first conceived as a solo end-credits song for Ally in an earlier version of the story in which Jackson dies by drowning, a concept that shaped the song's imagery, before it was reworked into the duet between the two leads.- Beyoncé was the first choice to play Ally and worked with Bradley Cooper on the role for a year before leaving the project; Adele was briefly considered as a replacement before Cooper cast Lady Gaga.
