Plot summary
Paterson is a bus driver in Paterson, New Jersey, the city he shares a name with. Every day he follows the same routine: he drives his route and listens to the people riding the bus, writes poems in a notebook he keeps with him, walks the family dog Marvin, and drinks a single beer at Shades Bar, where Doc is the owner. At home his wife Laura is the only person who reads his poems, and she loves them. She has long urged him to do something with them, to make copies or find a publisher, and he agrees to take care of it at the copy shop over the weekend. Laura's world changes almost daily, each time with a different project or ambition; Paterson supports her, and she encourages his writing.

- The poems attributed to the character Paterson were provided by the poet Ron Padgett, four of them existing poems and three written new for the film, while Jarmusch himself wrote "Water Falls", the poem attributed to a young girl.
