Plot summary
The KGB holds Philip Kimberley, who once ran Britain's Secret Intelligence Service and defected to Russia. Its officers give him a new face through plastic surgery and send him back to Britain for vital intelligence documents. In the United Kingdom he walks away from his Soviet handlers and works for himself. MI6 and the KGB are each hunting him and the documents, while he plays the two services against each other.

- Filming on The Jigsaw Man was reportedly shut down over cash difficulties, and Laurence Olivier, who had been ill on and off since the late 1970s, collapsed on set. He walked away after receiving no pay, with Michael Caine following not long after.
- Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine returned to the film after $4 million in financing was secured by Pakistani businessman, filmmaker and best-selling author Mahmud Sipra.
- Eileen Atkins was supposed to leap out of a wedding cake, but the scene was cut because her cardboard and cellophane leotard was felt to be too obviously ill-fitting.
