George Pastell
Biography
George Pastell was a Cypriot actor known for character roles in British film and television in the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Cyprus in 1923, he spent two years in banking before joining the Greek National Theatre at 21, then moved to England, where he studied English and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He made his screen debut in Give Us This Day (1949) as Nino Pastellides, and he usually played villains. Hammer Film Productions gave him Eastern characters: he played Mehemet Bey in The Mummy (1959), and in The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb (1964) he was Hashmi Bey. He also appeared in spy films such as From Russia with Love (1963) and Deadlier Than the Male (1967), plus Tiger Bay (1959), Konga (1961), The Moon-Spinners (1964). On stage he played the King of Siam in The King and I and starred in Flower Drum Song. Television credits included Danger Man, The Avengers, and Doctor Who.
