Plot summary
The Spanish galleon Neptune pulls two castaways from the Atlantic in 1659: the aging English pirate Captain Red and Jean-Baptiste, a young sailor called Frog. In the brig they meet Boomako, the cook, jailed on a charge of poisoning the ship's captain, and learn that a golden Aztec throne is being carried in the hold. Red decides to seize it. Frog falls for Maria-Dolores, the niece of Maracaibo's governor and a passenger on the voyage. When the captain dies, command passes to his first mate, Don Alfonso de la Torré, who also wants Maria-Dolores, though she does not return his feelings. Put to work with the crew, Red and Frog try to start a mutiny.
