Biography

Alberto Sordi was an Italian actor, comedian, director, and screenwriter whose career in Italian cinema lasted seven decades. Born in Rome in 1920, he started as a voice actor, most famously dubbing Oliver Hardy, and as a theater performer before becoming a comedian. His work with Federico Fellini on The White Sheik (1952) and I Vitelloni (1953) won him critical praise and a Nastro d'Argento. The Great War (1959) marked a turn toward complex dramatic roles and brought him another Nastro d'Argento plus his first David di Donatello, while Everybody Go Home! (1960) earned him a second David. He acted in films such as An American in Rome (1954), The Best of Enemies (1961), and Complexes (1965), and in 1966 made his directorial debut with Fumo di Londra, going on to direct 19 films. His many honors included five Nastro d'argento and ten David di Donatello, as well as a Golden Globe and a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement.

Sordi made his directorial debut in 1966 with Fumo di Londra, which he also wrote and starred in, and it won him another David di Donatello.
Behind the camera
Sordi directed Journey with Papa and starred in it alongside Carlo Verdone. The pairing of actors from two generations pleased audiences, the box office hit record highs, and the Christmas release began his tradition of a film before Christmas each year.
A first
Sordi took home ten David di Donatello, the top film honor in Italy, and no other performer has won that prize as best actor more often.
Behind the camera
Sordi co-founded the production company P.F.C. (Produzione Film Comici) with Vittorio De Sica in 1950, but left it the following year.
