Plot summary
In Italian East Africa in 1941, British Major Richardson and the pilot Burke come down in the desert, where an Italian detachment takes them prisoner. Captain Blasi does the questioning, and Richardson will say no more than his name, rank and serial number. The Italians beat off a British night attack, though Major Fornari is killed, and Blasi takes command of the unit. He and Richardson get on each other's nerves as the days pass. Blasi decides to turn Richardson and Burke loose, expecting that the British will learn how ineffectual his force is and leave it alone. Richardson instead gets orders to take his motorized squadron after Blasi's men.
