Biography

Vittorio Gassman was an Italian actor, director and screenwriter, and one of his country's most celebrated performers. Born in Genoa, he studied at the Silvio D'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome. He made his stage debut in Milan in 1942, then acted at the Teatro Eliseo with Tino Carraro and Ernesto Calindri before joining Luchino Visconti's company, where he played Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire and took the title role in Othello. His film debut came in 1946 with Preludio d'amore, and he became known for commedia all'italiana after Mario Monicelli's Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958). Other notable films include Bitter Rice (1949), The Great War (1959), The Monsters (1963), For Love and Gold (1966) and We All Loved Each Other So Much (1974). He also directed for the stage, founded a theater school in Florence and voiced Mufasa in the Italian dub of The Lion King (1994).

    Gassman's entry into commedia all'italiana was accidental, in Mario Monicelli's Big Deal on Madonna Street, and the film's success helped his career because he had not been considered suited to comedy.

    Gassman's performance in the television series Il Mattatore earned him the nickname Il Mattatore, which stayed with him for the rest of his life.

    In 1952, Gassman and Luigi Squarzina started and ran the Teatro d'Arte Italiano together, and it put on Italy's first full Hamlet.
