Plot summary
Rome, 1849. Pope Pius IX has taken refuge in Gaeta, and a republic now rules the Papal States while French and Austrian soldiers close in to bring back the pope's temporal power, a restoration that many nobles favor. The Marquis Arquati's household holds his shy son Eufemio, Eufemio's wife Cristina, whom the family pressed into the marriage, his daughter Giacinta, and Rosetta, the servant who is also his mistress. Cristina sides with the Republic, and Captain Giovanni Livraghi, a Milanese revolutionary who came to the republicans' aid, is her lover. Livraghi is a close friend of the Barnabite friar Ugo Bassi, a priest loyal to his calling who rejects the temporal power. Commoners rise for the Republic too, among them Angelo Brunetti, called Ciceruacchio, with his twelve-year-old son Lorenzo.
