Plot summary
Alberto Nardi is a Roman businessman who believes he is a man of great capabilities, though his factory, which makes lifts and elevators, is always close to catastrophe. His wife, Elvira Almiraghi, is a wealthy and successful businesswoman from Milan with a no-nonsense attitude, and she barely tolerates the money her husband takes from her to keep his works going and to cover his debts. Alberto tries to keep pace with Elvira and her rich friends, and each attempt makes him look foolish. Amused, Elvira shows him off in public as a silly clown, certain that he will never leave her, since he hopes to profit from her fortune.

- Italy's 1959 theatrical review committee recommended two cuts to Il Vedovo before it was screened publicly: a priest sipping wine at a funeral, and Elvira's line about "an Anita Garibaldi type of fool". The censors deemed the scene immoral and the line against national reputation and decency; Minister Domenico Magrì signed document N° 3036 on 17 November 1959.
