Amedeo Nazzari
Biography
Amedeo Nazzari was an Italian actor and a leading figure of Italian classic cinema, often compared to Errol Flynn. Born in Cagliari in 1907, he worked mainly in theater before entering a Twentieth Century Fox contest to replace Rudolph Valentino, losing to Alberto Rabagliati. He debuted in Ginevra degli Almieri (1935) and had an early role in Cavalry (1936). His breakthrough was Luciano Serra, Pilot (1938), which made him a matinee idol and Italy's most bankable star. He typically played masculine heroes, often military, and worked with many leading actresses. Later he appeared in melodramas with Raffaello Matarazzo, such as Catene (1949), and played Alberto Lazzari in Federico Fellini's Nights of Cabiria (1957). He received a David di Donatello Special David, a Venice Best Actor prize for Caravaggio, il pittore maledetto (1941), and a Nastro d'Argento for Il bandito (1947). He died in 1979.

A role that slipped away
After screen tests, Italian professionals turned Nazzari down. They thought he was too tall and thin, and that his expression was too gloomy.
