Leopoldo Trieste
Biography
Leopoldo Trieste was an Italian actor, screenwriter, playwright and film director. Born in Reggio Calabria, he began as a playwright, debuting in 1945 with La frontiera at the Teatro Quirino, and entered film as a screenwriter before Federico Fellini steered him toward acting with The White Sheik (1952) and I Vitelloni (1953). He became a character actor and directed two films, Il peccato degli anni verdi and Città di notte, but poor box office led him to abandon directing. In the early 1960s critics praised him in A Day for Lionhearts and Pietro Germi's Divorce Italian Style (1961) and Seduced and Abandoned (1964), the latter winning a Nastro d'Argento for best supporting actor. He played a loan shark in The Godfather Part II (1974), won another Nastro for Henry IV, and appeared in Giuseppe Tornatore's The Star Maker (1995), which earned him a third Nastro and a David di Donatello. He also worked in television. He died in 2003.
