Plot summary
On 8 September 1943, Lieutenant Alberto Innocenzi is stationed at a base on the Venetian coast when Italy's surrender comes. The German troops who were allies surround and storm the installation. Innocenzi escapes with a group of disbanded soldiers, but while he wants to find a higher command and report for duty, the men consider their war finished and want to go home. He sheds his uniform and, with army engineer Ceccarelli and sergeant Fornaciari, sets out southward through a country split between German and Allied occupation, where partisan fighting, reprisals and press-gangs lie ahead. On the road the three come across a band of anti-fascist guerrillas, whom they decline to join.
