Federico Fellini
Biography
Federico Fellini was an Italian filmmaker whose life and dreams became raw material for his films. Born in Rimini, he moved to Rome in 1939 and enrolled at the University of Rome, then worked as a journalist, drawing editors' notice with his cartoons and caricatures and going on to submit articles. Some of that writing was reworked into a radio serial about a young married couple, with the acting student Giulietta Masina as Pallina. In 1940 the comedian Aldo Fabrizi befriended him, and through that connection he worked on the script of Roberto Rossellini's Rome, Open City (1945) and was credited on Paisan (1946). Observing the editing of that film, he found his life's work, and his own features drew on his hometown and his family, including his father, who appeared in La Dolce Vita (1960) and 8½ (1963).
