Plot summary
Pope Pius VII rules the Papal States from Rome in 1809, holding temporal and spiritual power through his cardinals and ministers. The marquis Onofrio del Grillo counts among his favorites and ranks as the worst of the nobility. His rank protects him, so he mocks the poor without fear of answering for it. When he is taken in during a meal with ordinary criminals, he addresses the crowd and claims that noble birth lets him do as he likes, while the poor are worth nothing. The cabinet maker Aronne Piperno asks for the wages he is owed; Onofrio refuses, saying a Jewish creditor murdered Jesus. Piperno brings the case to court, and Onofrio wins by bribing the judges and cardinals.
