Plot summary
Cornelius, Zira and Dr. Milo repair Taylor's spacecraft and leave their world ahead of its destruction. A time warp carries the chimpanzees to Earth in 1973. They are housed at the Los Angeles Zoo, watched by Dr. Stephanie Branton and Dr. Lewis Dixon. A Presidential Commission looks into the return of Taylor's ship. Questioned, the two apes say they do not know Taylor, but they do say they traveled from the future, having fled a war. The government receives them as guests, and they become celebrities.

- 20th Century-Fox still wanted a sequel even though Beneath the Planet of the Apes seemed to have ended the series; Arthur P. Jacobs sent Beneath screenwriter Paul Dehn a telegram reading "Apes exist, Sequel required."

Sal Mineo agreed to appear in the film hoping it would restart his career, as the first Apes film had done for Roddy McDowall, but when the ape make-up proved uncomfortable the script was rewritten so his character died earlier than planned.- Escape from the Planet of the Apes was Sal Mineo's final theatrical film; he was murdered on February 12, 1976, at the age of 37.
- To get around Beneath's destructive ending, Paul Dehn had Cornelius and Zira travel back in time in Taylor's spaceship, and he consulted Pierre Boulle, author of the original novel, to give the script the same satirical elements.
