Bradford Dillman
Biography
Bradford Dillman was an American actor and author. Between 1953 and 1995, he worked on more than 140 productions for film, television, and the stage. Born in San Francisco, he trained at the Actors Studio and apprenticed at the Sharon Playhouse in Connecticut. In 1953 he starred in an Off-Broadway production of The Scarecrow. On Broadway, he played Edmund Tyrone in the Eugene O'Neill play Long Day's Journey into Night, winning a Theatre World Award. For the film Compulsion (1959), he shared the Cannes Film Festival Best Actor award with Dean Stockwell and Orson Welles. He also earned a Golden Globe for In Love and War (1958) and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. He concentrated on television later in his career, guest-starring in many series. He appeared in Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) and later in Sudden Impact (1983). He wrote two books, and his last acting role was on Murder, She Wrote in 1995.

Dillman declined a scholarship to London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Instead, he took the lead in an Off-Broadway staging of The Scarecrow in 1953.
First role
Dillman's first Broadway role was Edmund Tyrone in the U.S. premiere of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night, a part he originated and played for 390 performances.
Behind the camera
Dillman wrote a book for football fans, Inside The New York Giants, published in 1995. His autobiography, Are You Anybody?: An Actor's Life, came out in 1997.
