Trailer

Plot summary

The Tennessee Valley Authority is clearing land for a hydroelectric dam, and Chuck Glover runs its land purchasing office in Garthville, Tennessee. The authority needs Garth Island in the river, but Ella Garth, whose family has farmed it for decades, refuses to sell, and the TVA wants no forced removal. Clearing is behind schedule because the mayor hires only white workers. Chuck hires Black laborers at full pay, and R.J. Bailey, a cotton farmer losing his sharecroppers to those wages, resents him. Ella's grown sons would rather not work for a living. Chuck also grows close to Carol Baldwin, Ella's widowed granddaughter, whom the town expects to marry businessman Walter Clark.
