Plot summary
Joe Bomposa is a gangster, and Jackie Pruit is the girlfriend the FBI hopes will testify against him. Agents believe she holds evidence that would put Bomposa behind bars for life, and when his men appear to threaten her life, the FBI steps in to protect her. Detective Charlie Congers, a veteran of the Phoenix police, is assigned to bring Jackie back to the United States and to watch over her until the trip is made. She knows almost nothing about Bomposa's business that would be of value to the FBI, and while he guards her, Congers falls in love with her.

- Love and Bullets was originally to have been directed by John Huston, with advertisements taken out in Variety promoting that; Huston reportedly filmed some scenes but walked off the set after disagreements with the producers, and Stuart Rosenberg took over the troubled production.
- Screenwriter Wendell Mayes said the director who replaced John Huston wanted changes he opposed, so another writer was put on the film, and that what audiences saw, though his name is on it for story and screenplay, is half of what it was.
