A toy store owner named Mr. Hucklebuckle, who encouraged Christmas spirit through an organization called the Santa Cause, has died, and Santa Claus learns of it by letter. Hucklebuckle's grandson James and his wife Kate reach the New York shop, where their caseworker Mr. Stewart tells them they must turn a profit for a single Christmas season to earn ownership, so they plan to hire a store Santa. Quinn's new home is an orphanage overseen by Gladys Stout, a strict woman who dislikes the holiday and burns the toys she confiscates. Quinn befriends the other girls, among them the oldest, Willamina, called Will.
