Richard Armitage
Biography
Richard Armitage is an English actor and author who trained at LAMDA and began his career in theater, including work with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Born in 1971 in Leicestershire, he became known in Britain for his first leading television role, John Thornton in North & South (2004). His portrayal of Thorin Oakenshield in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy, released from 2012 to 2014, earned him international recognition. He played the Nazi spy Heinz Kruger in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). Later he co-starred in the heist comedy Ocean's Eight (2018). On stage, his John Proctor in The Crucible at The Old Vic earned an Olivier Award nomination. He has also worked as a voice actor, narrating audiobooks and voicing Trevor Belmont in Castlevania. His writing includes the crime thriller Geneva, published in 2023, and The Cut, published in 2025.

Armitage was the first actor to audition for John Thornton in North & South and the last person cast, with the director and producers taking a chance on a little-known actor.
First role
Armitage's first major television part was John Standring in the BBC drama Sparkhouse, which aired in 2002. He said it was the first time he went to an audition in character.
Early training
Armitage enrolled at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 1993 to study acting, after doubting musical theater was the right career path.
A change of course
After finishing at Pattison College in 1988, Armitage spent six months with the Nachtcircus in Budapest. He did this to get his Equity Card, which entertainment professionals then needed to work in the UK.
Big break
American casting agents saw posters of Armitage as John Porter in London. That role led to his casting in Captain America: The First Avenger, where he played the Nazi spy Heinz Kruger.
A first
Armitage provided the voice of the Daemon Prince Be'lakor in Total War: Warhammer III in 2022, his first performance in a video game.
