Plot summary
Mortimer "Mo" Folchart repairs old books and raises his thirteen-year-old daughter Meggie; his wife Resa has disappeared. He travels with Meggie through Europe, visiting antique shops in search of a copy of the novel Inkheart. In one shop, a stranger named Dustfinger calls Mo by the name Silvertongue and asks to be read back into the book. Mo can bring characters out of stories when he reads aloud, and each such reading sends someone from the real world into the book. Dustfinger, the villain Capricorn, and Capricorn's man Basta are among the characters who left Inkheart years ago. Mo takes Meggie to her great-aunt Elinor Loredan in Italy. Capricorn's men arrive, seize the book, and take Mo, Meggie, and Elinor away.

- Author Cornelia Funke sent Brendan Fraser a copy of Inkheart shortly after the novel was published, with a note explaining that he had been her inspiration for the character of Mo.
- Visual effects house Double Negative built the film's creatures, including the billowing, pyroclastic monster The Shadow, the surreal winged monkeys with their raven black feathers, and villain Capricorn's final transition.
- Inkheart's American release was pushed back by more than a year, from a planned Christmas 2007 date to 23 January 2009 in the US, because of the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike; Britain got it on 12 December 2008.
- Inkheart took $17,303,424 in the United States but $45,146,937 internationally, for a worldwide total of $62,450,361, and added another $8.3 million in US DVD sales during its first week.
