Plot summary
Gus Matthews, Richie Goodman and Clark Reedy are grown men who missed out on baseball in childhood and still wish they had played. Gus and Clark see a little league team bullying Nelson Carmichael and his friends on a diamond, and they chase the players away. When Gus and Clark bring Richie to the field, the bullies come back and tell them to leave; Gus challenges them to a game for the field, and the trio wins even though Richie and Clark play badly. Nelson's billionaire father Mel becomes their backer, and after an altercation with Jerry, who tormented Richie and Clark as boys, Mel organizes a statewide round-robin. The prize is access to a ballpark Mel is building, and the three enter as the Benchwarmers.
