Robert Lindsay
Biography
Robert Lindsay is an English actor, born in Ilkeston in 1949, who trained at Clarendon College in Nottingham and then at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His early screen work included Adventures of a Taxi Driver (1976), and he came to prominence on television as Jakey Smith in Get Some In! and as Wolfie Smith in Citizen Smith. He appeared in BBC Shakespeare productions such as Twelfth Night (1980) and Much Ado About Nothing, and won an Olivier Award for Me and My Girl before taking the role to Broadway, where he won a Tony. Later films include Bert Rigby, You're a Fool (1989), Fierce Creatures (1997), Divorcing Jack (1998), Wimbledon (2004), and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019). On television he played Captain Pellew in Hornblower, won a BAFTA Television Award for G.B.H., and starred as Ben Harper in My Family from 2000 to 2011.

Behind the award
Robert Lindsay won an Olivier Award for playing Bill Snibson in the 1984 London revival of Me and My Girl, then took the same production to Broadway and won a Tony Award for it.
Early training
Lindsay was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1968 with the help of a government grant, after friends at Nottingham Playhouse urged him to apply.
Big break
In 1977 Lindsay took the lead part of Wolfie Smith, a delusional revolutionary, in the BBC sitcom Citizen Smith. He became a television star whose shows drew 24 million viewers.
A first
Lindsay was the sole actor to appear in two Stephen Poliakoff dramas, Friends and Crocodiles and Gideon's Daughter, which were loosely linked and shown on BBC One in January and February 2006.
