Eleanor Bron
Biography
Eleanor Bron is an English actress and author who first performed with the Cambridge Footlights in 1959, in a revue called The Last Laugh, at a time when the troupe had previously used men in drag for female parts. Born in Stanmore in 1938, she studied modern languages at Cambridge. Her screen work includes playing Ahme in the Beatles film Help! (1965), a doctor in Alfie (1966), Margaret Spencer in Bedazzled (1967), and took the part of Hermione Roddice in Women in Love (1969). She also appeared in Two for the Road (1967), A Touch of Love (1969), Black Beauty (1994) and A Little Princess (1995). On television she was in Yes Minister, Doctor Who and Absolutely Fabulous, and she played Mrs Barrymore in The Hound of the Baskervilles (1983). Her stage credits include the West End musical The Card and In Extremis at Shakespeare's Globe. She wrote Life and Other Punctures.

Bron's career started with the Cambridge Footlights revue of 1959, The Last Laugh, which also featured Peter Cook. Adding a female performer was a departure, since the troupe had been all-male, with female characters played in drag.
A first
Bron played Ahme in the Beatles' film Help! in 1965. Paul McCartney may have drawn on her name as one inspiration when he wrote "Eleanor Rigby".
A change of course
Chosen in 1985 for her authoritative tone, Bron became "the voice of BT", and British telephone error messages still carry her voice.
Beyond film
Bron wrote and performed new verses for Camille Saint-Saens' The Carnival of the Animals. With the Nash Ensemble, she also took the female reciter part in William Walton's Facade, performing and recording it.
