Biography

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is a Danish actor born in Rudkøbing who studied at the Danish National School of Performing Arts and first acted on stage in Hamlet. His breakthrough came in the 1994 Danish horror film Nightwatch, and he went on to appear in Bent (1997), Wildside and Misery Harbour. He entered American film in Black Hawk Down (2001), portraying Gary Gordon, a Medal of Honor recipient, and later took parts in Enigma, My Name Is Modesty (2004), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Wimbledon (2004) and Firewall (2006). He starred as a New York homicide detective who cannot die in the Fox series New Amsterdam, which was short-lived, and appeared in Virtuality. From 2011 to 2019 he was Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones, earning two Primetime Emmy Award nominations and other honors. Later films include Headhunters (2011), Mama (2013), Oblivion (2013), A Thousand Times Good Night (2013), Gods of Egypt (2016), Shot Caller (2017) and The Silencing (2020).

    Coster-Waldau's first U.S. movie was Black Hawk Down. A friend helped him put himself on tape in the attic over his apartment in Copenhagen, and they shipped it out.
