Plot summary
Years after leaving his small Nebraska town, John Farley has become a motivational author with a bestseller about moving on from the past. A book tour brings him back to accept the town's highest honor, and at home he finds that his mother, Beverly, a widow, is seeing Jasper Woodcock, the P.E. teacher who made school miserable for John and other students. John does not approve; when Beverly and Woodcock get engaged, he sets out to talk her out of the marriage, with his best friend Nedderman's help.

- Craig Gillespie walked away from his own debut feature after bad test screenings, and many scenes were rewritten and reshot by David Dobkin, who took no credit, so Gillespie was left carrying the blame for the film that reached cinemas.
- Seann William Scott later said he and Billy Bob Thornton spent time on set talking about how terrible the film was, adding that there is nothing worse than turning up to a set knowing the picture could end your career.
