Plot summary
Richard Clark teaches at Wellington Academy, the prep school his father, Thaddeus Clark, runs, and he is not satisfied there. He takes a job at Marion Barry High School, in the Los Angeles area, and arrives to find the school in disarray. Principal Evelyn Doyle has given up on her students, dislikes Richard from the start and expects him to fail. Her assistant, Victoria Chappell, is cheerful and sympathizes with the troubled students. Griff McReynolds, a student and former gang member, wants to graduate and go to college, while the gang leader Paco harasses the new teacher. Richard sets out to reach his class, and he grows close to Victoria.
