Dick Emery
Biography
Dick Emery was an English comic actor and comedian whose broadcasting career started in radio during the 1950s. Born in Bloomsbury, London, he was the son of the double act Callan and Emery. After serving in the RAF during the Second World War, where Ralph Reader recruited him for the RAF Gang Show, he went back to the stage as a comedian, appearing at the Windmill Theatre. His radio work included Chance of a Lifetime and Workers' Playtime, and in 1957 he replaced Harry Secombe for an episode of The Goon Show. He played Private Chubby Catchpole in the final run of The Army Game, a part that brought him a BBC contract and began The Dick Emery Show, broadcast from 1963 to 1981. His films included The Fast Lady (1962), The Big Job (1965) and Yellow Submarine (1968), for which he supplied several character voices. He also recorded novelty singles, among them If You Love Her.

First role
Emery's first screen role came in the Goons' short The Case of the Mukkinese Battle Horn, directed by Joseph Sterling in 1954.
Big break
Emery played Private Chubby Catchpole in the last series of The Army Game, shown on ITV in 1960. That part brought him an exclusive BBC contract and started his own long-running show.
A change of course
Emery created the drag character Vera Thin, the Forces' Sweetheart, loosely based on Vera Lynn, and said he was better in drag than combat gear.
Beyond film
Emery recorded novelty records too. In 1969 "If You Love Her" got to number 32, and in 1973 "You Are Awful" came close to the top 40 but did not make it.
