Lance Percival
Biography
Lance Percival was an English comic performer who acted and sang and became known in the early 1960s for topical calypsos on satirical television shows. Ned Sherrin discovered him at the Blue Angel Club, and he appeared on That Was The Week That Was. His early films included Carry On Cruising (1962), cameos in The V.I.P.s (1963) and The Yellow Rolls-Royce (1964), and second billing in the musical It's All Over Town (1964). He had his own BBC series, Lance at Large (1964). He voiced Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr in the cartoon series The Beatles (1965) and Old Fred in Yellow Submarine (1968). Later roles came in Darling Lili (1970), Too Late the Hero (1970), Up Pompeii (1971) and Up the Front (1972). He wrote the game show Whodunnit! with Jeremy Lloyd from 1972 to 1978 and later worked as a writer and after-dinner speaker. He died in 2015.

Getting ready for a role
Percival voiced both Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr in the 1965 cartoon series The Beatles. That led to his role as "Old Fred," the main character in the Beatles' animated film Yellow Submarine.
A role that slipped away
Percival appeared in several British comedy films, among them the Carry On film Carry On Cruising in 1962, where he replaced Charles Hawtrey, who had resigned after a dispute over billing.
Big break
Percival was discovered by Ned Sherrin while performing at the Blue Angel Club in Mayfair, which led to his topical calypso performances on That Was The Week That Was.
A change of course
Percival also formed a calypso group that he called Lord Lance, and the group toured both the US and Canada.
