Plot summary
A thief takes the Pink Panther diamond from a museum in Lugash, leaving a white glove with a gold P embroidered on it, and the Shah asks for Inspector Clouseau. Clouseau's boss, Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus, has demoted him to beat cop, but the French government orders his reinstatement. Clouseau inspects the crime scene in Lugash and decides the glove points to Sir Charles Litton, the jewel thief known as the Phantom, so he watches Sir Charles's house in Nice and follows Lady Claudine Litton to a hotel in Gstaad. Sir Charles, who says he had no part in the theft, leaves France for Lugash to clear his name.

- United Artists, the franchise's distributor and main backer, rejected the film as they had no interest in working with Blake Edwards nor Peter Sellers, whose careers had declined. British producer Lew Grade agreed to finance two films for Edwards as part of a deal to get Edwards' wife, Julie Andrews, to appear in a TV special for him.
- The film was a commercial hit, earning $75 million worldwide on a $5 million budget, and revived the previously dormant Pink Panther series and with it Peter Sellers' career.
