Biography

Wanda Ventham is an English actress with a long career in British television that began in the 1950s. Born in Brighton, she initially hoped to become an artist and spent school holidays painting scenery at the Connaught Theatre in Worthing, an experience that persuaded her to pursue acting. After graduating from the Central School of Speech and Drama in 1956, she made her first film appearance in My Teenage Daughter (1956). Her film roles included the Carry On films Carry On Cleo (1964) and Carry On Up the Khyber (1968), and she starred opposite Mark Burns in Death Is a Woman (1966). On television she became best known as Colonel Virginia Lake in the cult science-fiction series UFO, and later played Pamela Parry in Only Fools and Horses from 1989 to 1992. Her many other credits include Doctor Who, on which she appeared three times across three decades, Danger Man, The Prisoner, The Sweeney, Minder, Heartbeat, and Holby City.

Early training
Ventham studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama, where Judi Dench was a contemporary, and she graduated in 1956.
A change of course
Ventham wanted to be an artist and went to art school for a year while painting scenery for the Connaught Theatre in Worthing, West Sussex, during school holidays. Seeing professional theater led her to leave art school and act.
