Plot summary

Lieutenant Howard Clemmons has no seniority and no gift for army life, so he is handed an experimental camel corps in Texas in 1854. At Fort Val Verde, Sergeant Uriah Tibbs and his troopers competed for a place in the project and believe they are getting Arabian horses; Clemmons does not tell them what is actually coming. Colonel Seymour Hawkins, the post commander, shows no interest. The camels arrive and the soldiers ride their own horses away in anger, so Clemmons and Hi Jolly, an Arab camel trainer, must manage the animals themselves. When the herd is driven through town, horses stampede, a wagon overturns and Colonel Hawkins's daughter Jennifer is covered in molasses.
