Plot summary
Rob and Nell McLaughlin work a ranch in Wyoming, where their ten-year-old son, Ken, lives with them. Ken has been away at boarding school and comes home with poor grades, and Rob is disappointed, blaming the boy for a lack of responsibility. Nell suggests that Rob let Ken raise a horse of his own, and Rob reluctantly agrees, allowing the boy to choose a single young horse from the herd. Ken picks a chestnut mustang filly, a yearling, and calls her Flicka. Ranch hand Gus tells him the name is Swedish for girl. The fiery filly is not the choice Rob had in mind.
