Roy Barcroft

Biography

Roy Barcroft was an American character actor whose specialty was screen villainy, particularly in B-Westerns. Born in Nebraska in 1902, he moved to California in 1929, and worked as a film extra before being discovered in an amateur theater production. Early screen work included the serials Flash Gordon (1936) and The President's Mystery (1936). In 1943, he signed an exclusive ten-year contract with Republic Pictures, where he appeared in almost 150 films and serials and became a familiar screen bad guy; critic Leonard Maltin described him as Republic's leading villain. His career slowed as B-Westerns declined, but he continued in television and B-movies, including a marshal role in Oklahoma! (1955), parts in the western series Annie Oakley, and a role in the serial Spin and Marty. He also did voice work in films and television, and he died in 1969.

Barcroft was spotted while performing in an amateur theater production. He had taken up acting as a hobby to better his speaking voice for his work as a salesman.

In 1943 Barcroft signed a contract with Republic that tied him exclusively to the studio for 10 years. Under it he appeared in almost 150 films and serials, and audiences of the day knew him at once as the villain.
