Richard Farnsworth

Biography

Richard Farnsworth was an American actor and stuntman who gradually moved into acting in Western movies. After uncredited appearances in films such as Gone with the Wind and The Ten Commandments, he received his first film acting credit in 1963 and later acted in many Westerns and television shows. He earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Comes a Horseman (1978) and found a breakthrough as stagecoach robber Bill Miner in The Grey Fox (1982). He appeared in The Natural (1984), Anne of Green Gables (1985) and Misery (1990), and played a wealthy oil man in The Two Jakes (1990). He also had roles in the television productions Roots and The Boys of Twilight. His final role was Alvin Straight in The Straight Story (1999), which brought him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Farnsworth earned an Academy Award nomination in 1978 for Best Supporting Actor for Comes a Horseman, and in 2000 he was nominated for Best Actor for The Straight Story, which made him the second-oldest nominee for that award.
Big break
Farnsworth played stagecoach robber Bill Miner in the 1982 Canadian film The Grey Fox, and this role brought him a breakthrough.

Farnsworth served as a pilot in the United States Air Force during WWII, flying with the 344th Bombardment Group and receiving the Silver Star for gallantry and bravery in combat.
