Plot summary
Matt Lowe robbed a train and hid $500,000 in gold before he died. His widow, Mrs. Lowe, intends to tell the railroad where the gold is so the family name can be cleared for her son. Lane, a gunhand, persuades her to bring the gold back herself and claim the $50,000 reward the railroad offers. He recruits old friends to help for a share. The other robbers from that job have gathered a gang determined to take the gold for themselves. The party rides into Mexico, where the gold lies hidden, with an unnamed Pinkerton agent working for Wells Fargo following them.

- Burt Kennedy wanted to cast Jack Elam, but said John Wayne refused because the actor felt Elam had outshone him in Rio Lobo.
- Filming took place in Sierra de Órganos National Park in the town of Sombrerete, Mexico, and two brief scenes take place in the square that was used for the final shootout in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
- Filming started in March 1972, and during the production an eight-year-old Mexican boy was hit by one of the cars associated with the film and died.
