Joey Bishop

Joey Bishop was an American entertainer and comedian born in the Bronx and raised in South Philadelphia. He began performing in the 1930s with the comedy trio the Bishop Brothers, playing nightclubs and burlesque houses along the East Coast. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he resumed solo work and became a regular at New York's Latin Quarter, where Frank Sinatra saw him and made him his opening act, leading to the nickname Sinatra's comic. Bishop guest-hosted The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson at least 175 times and starred in the sitcom The Joey Bishop Show from 1961 to 1965. He later hosted an ABC late-night talk show of the same name from 1967 to 1969, with Regis Philbin as his sidekick. On film he appeared with the Rat Pack in Ocean's Eleven (1960), played an American Indian in Texas Across the River (1966), and had roles in Betsy's Wedding (1990) and Mad Dog Time (1996).
