Andy Warhol

Biography

Andy Warhol, born Andrew Warhola Jr. in Pittsburgh, was an American artist and filmmaker who became a leading figure of pop art. He started out as a commercial illustrator in New York, creating shoe drawings for fashion magazines, before moving into fine art. In the early 1960s he made silkscreen paintings such as Campbell's Soup Can and Marilyn Diptych, which examined advertising, consumerism and celebrity. He later turned to experimental film, directing Blow Job, Empire, Chelsea Girls, Four Stars and Blue Movie, and gathered a shifting group of personalities known as his superstars at the Factory, his studio. He managed the Velvet Underground and staged the Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia events. He also started Interview magazine and put on the play Pork, and wrote books including The Philosophy of Andy Warhol and Popism. He moved into television and died in 1987.
