Plot summary
When canine flu spreads through Megasaki, Mayor Kenji Kobayashi decrees that every dog in the city be shipped to Trash Island. The first dog deported is Spots, bodyguard to Atari Kobayashi, the mayor's twelve-year-old orphaned nephew. Six months later, Atari takes a plane and crash-lands on the island searching for him. A pack of dogs finds the boy in the wreckage. Their leader is Chief, a lifelong stray who wants no part in helping a human, while Rex, Boss, Duke and King were all someone's pets. Nutmeg, a former show dog, persuades Chief to join the search. The pack consults Jupiter and Oracle, regarded as the island's wisest dogs. Meanwhile Professor Watanabe, who says a cure is nearly ready, is turned away by the mayor, and exchange student Tracy Walker suspects a conspiracy behind the banishment.
