Biography

Allen Ginsberg was an American poet and writer who, while studying at Columbia University in the 1940s, became friends with Lucien Carr, William S. Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac, and they formed the core of the Beat Generation. Born in Newark, New Jersey, and raised in nearby Paterson, he saw his earliest poems appear in the Paterson Morning Call and later earned a degree in English and American literature from Columbia. His poem Howl, first presented publicly at the Six Gallery in San Francisco in 1955, brought him worldwide fame after City Lights published it in 1956. His collection The Fall of America shared the National Book Award for Poetry in 1974, and in 1995 he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. From 1986 until his death in 1997, he taught as Distinguished Professor of English at Brooklyn College, and he helped found the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

    Wally Hedrick, a painter who helped found the Six Gallery, asked Ginsberg to arrange a poetry reading there. Ginsberg hesitated, but reading his draft of "Howl" changed his mind, and the event took place on October 7, 1955.
