Mal Evans

Biography

Mal Evans worked for the Beatles as a road manager and personal assistant, joining them in 1963 and staying until the group broke up in 1970. He grew up in Liverpool, where he worked as a telephone engineer and part-time bouncer at the Cavern Club before Brian Epstein hired him as an assistant roadie alongside Neil Aspinall. He was present on all their tours and later at nearly every recording session, and the Beatles occasionally used him as an extra musician, including on most of their albums from Rubber Soul onwards. He also appeared in several of their films, including Let It Be (1970), and played anvil on early takes of Maxwell's Silver Hammer. After the split he produced records for acts such as Badfinger, whose No Matter What reached the Billboard top 10 in December 1970, and he cowrote You and Me (Babe) with George Harrison for Ringo Starr's 1973 album Ringo.

Did you know?!

  1. First role

Evans became friends with George Harrison, who suggested him to Ray McFall, the Cavern Club's manager, when a doorman was needed. At 27, Evans got the job, partly because his burly 6 ft frame helped him hold back unruly fans.

  2. Own stunts

Evans played tambourine on "Dear Prudence" and trumpet on "Helter Skelter", where he and Lennon performed a double solo, despite the fact that neither of them was skilled on the instrument.

  3. Getting ready for a role

Evans also worked on the White Album out-take "What's the New Mary Jane". On "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" he hit an anvil, since Starr could not raise the hammer high enough for the right sound and to keep time with the song.

  4. Getting ready for a role

On "A Day in the Life," Evans was in charge of an alarm clock and counted the measures during the original 24-bar pause. He also was among the five piano players who struck the song's final chord at the same time.

  5. Getting ready for a role

Evans sang in the chorus of "Yellow Submarine" and added single organ notes to "You Won't See Me." McCartney showed him where the notes were, then nodded for him to play and shook his head to stop him.
