Plot summary

After a disputed election in the winter of 2011 returns Vladimir Putin to Russia's presidency, citizens across the country challenge the legitimacy of his rule. Young radical feminists who play punk rock, wear colored balaclavas and call themselves Pussy Riot join the protests. On 21 February 2012, five of them perform a punk prayer inside Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior until church security stops them. They say their action was aimed at the Orthodox Church leader, who backed Putin in the campaign. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina are arrested on 3 March and charged with hooliganism, and Yekaterina Samutsevich is arrested on 16 March. Bail is denied, and the three remain in custody until the trial opens in late July. Amnesty International calls them prisoners of conscience, and musicians including Madonna take up their case.
