George Sewell
Biography
George Sewell was an English actor who worked in theater, television and film, becoming best known for his television roles. Born in Hackney, London, he took up acting at 35, when Dudley Sutton encouraged him to audition for Joan Littlewood's production of Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be. After his debut as a policeman, he starred in Littlewood's Sparrers Can't Sing (1962) and Oh, What a Lovely War! (1963). On television he became a familiar face in crime and law enforcement roles. His role as Colonel Alec Freeman came in Gerry Anderson's UFO (1970). In 1973 he played DCI Alan Craven in Special Branch, and he later appeared as Mendel in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) and as Ratcliffe in the Doctor Who story Remembrance of the Daleks (1988). His film credits included Get Carter (1971), This Sporting Life (1963) and Poor Cow (1967). He died in 2007.

First role
At 35, Sewell had never thought about acting. A chance meeting with Dudley Sutton in a pub led Sutton to suggest he try out for Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop staging of Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be.
First role
Sewell's first acting role was a policeman in Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be, a Theatre Workshop production. He played the part at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East and in the West End.
A change of course
Sewell trained as a Royal Air Force pilot, but he finished too late to see action in the Second World War. After his demob, he joined the Merchant Navy.
Behind the award
In 1973, Eamonn Andrews surprised Sewell for This Is Your Life while he was on set shooting scenes for the TV series Special Branch.
