Plot summary
Three drug dealers are murdered in a house in Los Angeles, and the American government sends the special agent Paul Sherman to Amsterdam to trace the Dutch source of the heroin behind the drug war. Sherman, a native of the Netherlands, arrives at Schiphol Airport and sees Jimmy Duclos, the agent who came to meet him, shot dead. Colonel De Graaf, Amsterdam's chief of police, is unhappy about American interference in Dutch affairs, while Inspector Van Gelder, Sherman's contact, is more cooperative. The undercover agent Maggie is also on the case.

- The film's eight-minute boat chase along Amsterdam's canals reportedly inspired the boat chase in the James Bond film Live and Let Die two years later and the long canal chase in the 1988 thriller Amsterdamned.
- Don Sharp was specifically hired for four weeks to direct the boat chase, which was performed by Wim Wagenaar; the producers then kept him on to reshoot extra sequences, matching footage with a moviola of the original cut, and the plot and ending were changed.
- Alistair MacLean wrote the script, but Israeli financier Kurt Unger was unhappy with it and had it rewritten by Paul Wheeler, which upset MacLean; Wheeler says he wrote it for £2,000.
