Plot summary
A convicted murderer named Turk breaks away from police at Grand Central Terminal and phones Mida King, a Broadway actress he once dated, to say he will kill her. Mida leaves her show during intermission and hides in a private train car, intending to flee the city. Her body is discovered there by David V. Henderson, her fiancé, and his former fiancée Connie Furness. Inspector Gunther leads the investigation, though the cause of death remains unknown. Turk is caught, and Rocky Custer, a wisecracking private detective who worked for Turk, is detained for helping him evade arrest. Gunther also questions Mida's stepfather Ramon, ex-husband Paul Rinehart, producer Frankie Ciro, and maid Pearl Delroy. Rocky starts looking into the case on his own.
