Plot summary
Clay Santell rides into Sutterville after his horse is stolen, and the townspeople take him for Travers, a murderer. They seize him and hand him over to the lawman Harry Deckett. Deckett has spent a long time chasing the real Travers without success, and he knows the man brought before him is not the outlaw. He decides to kill Clay and pass the body off as Travers, which would bring him the reward money and the credit. Clay breaks away from him and rides off, taking Janet Gifford with him as a hostage while he tries to prove his real identity.
