Plot summary
Wing Chun master Ip Man leaves Japanese-occupied Foshan and settles his family in Hong Kong in 1949, hoping to open a school and earn a living from his art. The city does not know him and students are slow to come until a newcomer, Wong Leung, challenges him and loses. Wong returns with friends, is beaten again, and the group asks to learn from him as his first disciples. When Wong puts up promotional posters, Hung Ga students take him hostage and demand a ransom. Ip arrives at the wet market and fights through a crowd until Jin Shanzhao, a former bandit, comes to their aid. Hung Chun-Nam, head of the city's martial arts clubs, breaks up the fight and tells Ip that a new school must be tested before the masters.
