Plot summary
Master Tam, a wealthy man, is carrying on with the wife of Cheung, a rickshaw worker whom his village knows as a man who fears nothing. Tam wants Cheung gone and hires a Mao Shan sorcerer, Chin Hoi, to kill him without being implicated himself. Chin Hoi's junior disciple, Priest Tsui, refuses to join in, saying that their sect's rules forbid harming others, and Chin Hoi drives him out. A wager sends Cheung to spend a night in a temple, where Tsui appears and tells him to sleep on the roof. Then a coffin lid rises, and a hopping corpse worked by Chin Hoi's magic comes hunting for him.

- Encounters of the Spooky Kind was one of the first Hong Kong action horror comedies, and it popularised jiangshi, the hopping vampires of Chinese folklore, though it was not the first film to feature them.
- The film uses excerpts from a section of Béla Bartók's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, the same section Stanley Kubrick used in his 1980 film The Shining.
- Sammo Hung came up with the film after hearing ghost stories from Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore, and was discouraged by film industry peers who thought audiences would not care for its supernatural themes.
